If you already run, cycle, walk or do other cardio regularly, you might be wondering:

“Why would I need CrossFit?”

It’s a fair question.

And the short answer is: cardio is important, but it’s only one part of fitness.

Cardio makes you good at cardio

Running makes you better at running. Cycling makes you better at cycling.

But what about strength? Power? Balance? Coordination? Mobility? The ability to lift, carry, push, pull, jump and move well?

These are all important parts of being fit — and they don’t come from cardio alone.

That’s where CrossFit is different.

CrossFit trains more than just your cardiovascular system

At CrossFit Affinity, our programming combines cardiovascular conditioning with strength training, Olympic lifting, gymnastics and functional movements.

One day you might be lifting heavy.

The next, you might be running, rowing or working through a longer conditioning workout.

Another day you might be learning a new gymnastics skill.

The constantly varied nature of CrossFit means you’re not just getting fitter at one thing.

You’re building a body that’s capable of doing lots of things well.

What if I already run?

Keep running.

Seriously.

If you enjoy running, there’s no reason to stop. CrossFit can actually complement it by developing the strength, power and overall fitness that running doesn’t specifically train.

The same applies if you cycle, swim, play sport or simply enjoy getting out for a walk.

You don’t have to choose between cardio and CrossFit.

So, is CrossFit good for cardio?

Absolutely.

CrossFit develops cardiovascular fitness through a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training. The difference is that you’re developing your engine alongside strength, power, movement skills and overall physical capacity.

And that’s the goal.

Not just to be able to run further.

To be fitter, stronger and more capable in everyday life.

You don’t need to be fit to start

This is probably the biggest misconception we hear from people in Beachlands, Maraetai and across the Pohutukawa Coast.

You don’t need to be a runner.

You don’t need to have lifted weights before.

And you definitely don’t need to be “fit enough” for CrossFit.

Our coaches scale the movements, weights and intensity to suit you.

You just need to be willing to start.
